Renters insurance: what it covers and why it is worth it

The Indigo Risk Team · May 27, 2026

Renters insurance is easy to skip and easy to underestimate. For the price of a couple of coffees a month, it does a surprising amount.

What it actually covers

  • Your belongings — furniture, electronics, clothing — against theft, fire, and many types of damage, even when you are away from home.
  • Liability — if someone is hurt in your place, or you accidentally damage someone else's property.
  • Additional living expenses — if a covered event makes your rental unlivable, it helps with temporary housing.

What it does not cover

Your landlord's policy covers the building, not your possessions. Floods and earthquakes usually need separate coverage. And high-value items (jewelry, instruments) may need a rider.

Why it is worth it

Replacing everything you own out of pocket is expensive. A small monthly premium turns a potential disaster into a manageable claim — and many landlords now require it anyway.
